Chateau Vial is located at KPALIME, 120 km north-west of Lomé, a few kilometers from its border with Ghana. Above Kpalimé, a large village, is Mount Kloto, home to the Viale Castle, a presidential residence since 1975. This castle, built during the Second World War, began in 1940, and was completed in 1944, at a time when no paved road served Mount Kloto, let alone its summit. By the path that wound up to the summit, all the materials were carried on the backs of natives, from Kpalimé 17 km down. A residential space surrounded by terraces and protected by its guard tower. In 1979, the Vial Castle remained the presidential residence where African ministers and presidents such as Félix Houphouët-Boigny and Abdou Diouf have stayed; evidenced by the construction of a tarred road and the luxury interior … Between 79 and 82, the President restores the castle, the electricity team, marble the floor of the building, changes doors and windows, builds a large helicopter landing plaza, he adjoins an annex building parallelepiped six twin rooms absolutely identical for its closest ministers, paved the way that connects Kloto to Kpalimé (about 10 km). Like his predecessor, Eyadema will rarely stay in this immeasurable building, where he will receive two prominent guests of post-colonial African history, the father of Ivorian independence, Houphouet-Boigny, and the former president of Senegal and current Secretary General of the Francophonie, Abdou Diouf. Since 1982, the Château Viale is abandoned and becomes a place of walk for the hunter of images or the curious tourist. My Remark: 1. Building is still in shape, looked very strong and has a very large parking lot that served as a landing place for the presidential helicopter back in the days. It's a good place to visit if you're as curious as I am. 2. The actual place seemed far when going for the first time , has a lot of curvy roads since it's on the mountain but has no light. 3. There's no electricity working there currently, hence, no light so try your best to visit during the day if you're considering 4. There's no restrooms, you'll have to pee in the bush around but I'm sorry if nature calls , it'll be a bit of a problem. So prepare for your younger kids if you're going there with them. 5. You should probably have some water in your car. 6. There are some fruits to be grabbed somewhere along the line while climbing the mountain.
