The Future of the international Monetary Sysytem

The Foreign Policy Association proudly presents Dr. Mark J. Carney, Governor, Bank of Canada, as part of the John Hatab PricewaterhouseCoopers LLP Distinguished Lecture. Dr. Carney was appointed Governor of the Bank of Canada, effective 1 February 2008, for a term of seven years. As Governor, he is Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Bank. Born in Fort Smith, Northwest Territories, Dr. Carney received a bachelor's degree in economics from Harvard University in 1988. He received a master's degree in economics in 1993, and a doctorate in economics in 1995, both from Oxford University. Prior to joining the public service, Dr. Carney had a thirteen-year career with Goldman Sachs in its London, Tokyo, New York, and Toronto offices. His progressively senior positions included Co-Head of Sovereign Risk; Executive Director, Emerging Debt Capital Markets; and Managing Director, Investment Banking. Dr. Carney was Deputy Governor of the Bank of Canada from August 2003 until his appointment as Senior Associate Deputy Minister of Finance in November 2004. In addition to his domestic responsibilities in the Department of Finance, he also served as Canada's Finance Deputy at the G-7, the G-20, and the Financial Stability Forum.
