CARRIE - Stagedoor Manor, 1999 In 1988, CARRIE had a swift crash and burn on Broadway, but bootlegs of previews and word of mouth turned that show into a legend before opening night. It may have only played 5 regular performances, but if sin never dies, neither does CARRIE. An underground fanbase was growing in numbers and obsession, validated entirely in 1992 with the publication of Ken Mandelbaum's bible of Broadway flops, appropriately titled NOT SINCE CARRIE. It was then the legacy was officially cemented. One thing in particular made CARRIE all the more delicious. It was unobtainable. The authors refused to make the show available to license. No one could even do the damn thing. Not legally anyway. So, one day in 1999, Jeffrey Murphy decided asking forgiveness would be easier than getting permission and set forth on a mission to direct the first staging of CARRIE in eleven years -- at a summer theatre camp in Loch Sheldrake, New York. The renowned Stagedoor Manor Performing Arts Training Center became CARRIE's new home and the support system for Murphy's unauthorized labor of love. Rehearsals were in full swing when something terrifying happened. The show's authors found out what Murphy was up to. The twist is they didn't shut it down.
