Oral warts, benign growths in the mouth, are caused by the human papillomavirus (HPV). The main symptom is a painless bump, which can vary in appearance and location within the mouth. These warts often have a distinct cauliflower-like texture and flesh-colored appearance. Oral warts can grow, multiply, or regress, but most disappear within two years. Despite being painless, larger warts can hinder functions like speaking and eating. HPV-6 is the prevalent strain behind oral warts, whereas HPV-16 and HPV-18, linked to cancer, are less common in the oral cavity. Only a 1% risk exists for an oral wart to become cancerous. Adults, especially with multiple sexual partners or weakened immune systems, are more susceptible to oral warts. Biopsy remains the gold standard for diagnosing oral papillomas. Management ranges from watchful waiting and medication to surgical removal, with vaccines available for HPV prevention.
