Before the arrival of Christianity, England was a land alive with gods, spirits, and ancient rites. The Anglo-Saxons, who settled here between the 5th and 8th centuries AD, followed a rich tapestry of beliefs now called Anglo-Saxon paganism—a form of Germanic faith shared across much of northwestern Europe. This religion grew from the Iron Age traditions of northern Europe and arrived on British shores with the Anglo-Saxon migrations in the mid-5th century. For centuries, it shaped daily life, from the cycles of the seasons to the authority of kings. Even as Christianity spread across the kingdoms during the 7th and 8th centuries, traces of the old faith endured, blending into folklore and memory. Our knowledge of these ancient practices comes largely from Christian chroniclers such as Bede and Aldhelm, who wrote of a world their religion sought to replace. Temples and altars were burned, sacred groves destroyed, and rituals silenced. Yet the old beliefs left their mark: in the days of the week, bearing the names of gods like Woden and Thunor; in royal genealogies, linking kings to divine ancestors; and in extraordinary archaeological treasures, such as the Sutton Hoo burial. There, a helmet adorned with dancing, shamanic warriors hints at the spiritual power and imagination of a people who saw the sacred in both the natural and supernatural world. In this journey, we will uncover what remains of the religion that once dominated England: its gods, its sacred traditions, and the magical rituals that guided life, death, and the invisible forces all around them. 00:00 Introduction 02:11 Woden (God of Wisdom) 04:31 Týr (God of War, Law & the Sky) 06:38 Thunor (God of Thunder) 08:31 Frīg (Goddess of Marriage, Childbirth & prophecy) 10:30 Ing (God of Fertility) 12:52 Ēostre (Goddess of Spring & Renewal) 14:40 Siġel and Mōna (The Solar and Lunar Deities) 16:34 Seaxnēat (The Warrior God of the Saxons) 17:53 Shamanism, magic, and witchcraft 21:07 Legacy Music by: Alexander Nakarada - CreatorChords Grundar" by Alexander Nakarada (Royalty Free) link: • Celtic Music → "Grundar" by Alexander Naka... #historyprofiles #anglosaxon #anglosaxon #anglosaxons #paganism #woden #odin #thunor #thor #frigg #frigga #Týr #Frīg #ing #eostre #Ēostre #sigel #mona #Seaxnēat #gods #anglosaxongods #oldreligion #warrior #warriorspirit #cosmos #germanic #religion #religión #tiw #trending #trend #trendingvideo #trendinghistory #fypage #fypviral #fypyoutube #fyp #viralhistory #viralnow #viral #viralvideo
