Jackline Nyongesa was born and raised in Trans Nzoia. Her mother left when she and her siblings were still very young, and their father later brought home a stepmother. To survive, they brewed local alcohol so they could afford food. Their father was always working and rarely at home, while the stepmother favored her own children and made Jackline and her siblings do all the household chores. As she grew older, Jackline met a man and decided to marry him. However, after the birth of her first child, everything changed. Her husband mistreated her, even bringing other women into their home while forcing her to sleep outside the door. Despite the abuse, Jackline loved her marriage and did not want it to end, so she stayed. Her husband continued to mistreat her while fathering children one after another, leaving her to struggle alone. Jackline would go to pits in search of food, gathering fruits and anything edible to feed her children. The man abandoned them without providing any support. Today, Jackline and her children live in very poor conditions. With the heavy rains, life has become even harder—their house has no roof, and they are struggling to survive in such harsh circumstances.
