A massive whale washed ashore near Florence, Oregon. It measured about 45 feet long and weighed around eight tons. As the carcass began to rot, the smell grew unbearable, and officials needed a quick solution. The Oregon Highway Division decided to remove it using explosives. Their plan was to blast the whale into small pieces so that scavenging animals could clean up the remains. They placed roughly half a ton of dynamite under the whale and set it off in front of a crowd of curious spectators. The explosion was far more powerful than expected. Instead of scattering manageable chunks, huge pieces of blubber were hurled high into the air and rained down over a wide area. One large piece crushed a parked car.
