Fort Point is a National Historic Site of a seaside masonry fortress located on the base of the Golden Gate Bridge on the side of San Francisco, California. The fort was constructed before the American Civil War by the United States Army to defend the San Francisco Bay Area against hostile warships during the time. Built in 1853 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers, Fort Point was built to provide artillery to be as close to the water as possible to protect enemy warships from passing through the entrance of the San Francisco Bay. The structure featured 7 foot thick walls and multiple tiers for mounted cannons. At the time it was built, Fort Point was the only fortified structure on the West Coast of the United States which employed a crew of 200 who were labored for as long as eight years. During the 1930's, designs of the Golden Gate Bridge included the preservation of the fortress while original plans called for the removal of the structure. Today, Fort Point is now a protected historical landmark as the Fort Point National Historic Site and a historic museum, which is administered by the National Park Service as part of the Golden Gate National Recreational Area.
