This anomaly, more commonly found in pigs, occurs in a small percentage of humans, leading to the nickname ‘pig bronchus.’ Typically, this variant is asymptomatic and often discovered incidentally during imaging. In these scans, we can see the tracheal bronchus marked, branching off from the trachea rather than following the usual path through the right main bronchus. The carina, which normally serves as the tracheal bifurcation into the main bronchi, is located just below this branching point. While the tracheal bronchus usually doesn’t cause any issues, it’s important for clinicians to recognize it, especially in cases requiring intubation or bronchoscopy. In rare instances, this anomaly may be linked to tracheal stenosis or infections due to altered airway drainage.
