There is no prospect of Spain using the Brexit negotiations to pick Britain’s double lock commitment to Gibraltar on sovereignty. This according to Sir Peter Caruana, who – as Chief Minister – saw off the joint sovereignty threat in 2002, and subsequently obtained the double lock commitment from the UK that it will never even enter into a process of sovereignty negotiations with which Gibraltar is not content. He said there is no threat of the UK readopting any joint sovereignty initiative. Sir Peter told me Gibraltarians should not spend the next two years worrying; he is confident “it will be alright”.
