“The Long March Medley” is a song and dance epic originally written by Xiao Hua in 1965 as a series of twelve poems to commemorate the 30th anniversary of the victory of the Long March. Xiao Hua was a participant in the Long March, and ten of his poems were adapted by the composers Chen Geng, Sheng Mao, Tang He and Yu Qiu into a musical. After a successful debut performance by the PLA Beijing Unit Political Department Propaganda Troupe on 1 August 1965, the group accompanied Zhou Enlai on his diplomatic visits to Albania and Romania. They went on to tour in the Soviet Union, Japan and thirty other countries, becoming one of the first Chinese cultural ambassadors.
