I shot this video during a powerful Theyyam session at Kallikodan Kavu temple in Kannur, Kerala, where I arrived early morning from 5:30 AM onwards and witnessed Kuttichathan Theyyam, Gulikan Theyyam, and Bhairavan Theyyam up close until around 8:30 AM. The dawn light mixed with the fire lamps created such a magical vibe, and you can feel the energy from the drum beats filling the sacred grove as the rituals unfolded. Theyyam is a centuries-old ritual art form from North Kerala, especially Kannur and Kasaragod, where local deities and ancestral spirits are worshipped through dance, music, and elaborate costumes. The word Theyyam connects to “Daivam,” meaning god, and for the local community, these are divine darshan moments bringing blessings. Kuttichathan Theyyam ties to legends of a powerful spirit from old Brahmin families, involving magic, injustice, and revenge—now worshipped through this fiery ritual in many kavus. Gulikan Theyyam embodies a fierce protector linked to Lord Yama, safeguarding the village, removing obstacles, and upholding dharma between life and death. Bhairavan Theyyam channels a terrifying yet protective form of Bhairava (Lord Shiva), with intense expressions, heavy ornaments, and movements destroying negativity. In Kallikodan Kavu temple, Theyyam season typically runs from late November to early April (Malayalam months Vrischikam to Meenam), with sessions often starting at dawn on festival days. The whole locality gathers in the kavu to watch, seek oracles, pray, and receive direct blessings from the deities. In this video, I captured: • Vibrant costumes and face painting of Kuttichathan, Gulikan, and Bhairavan in early morning light • Traditional chenda, thudi percussion driving the rhythm Planning a Kannur Theyyam visit? Kavus like this offer authentic experiences—respect customs, dress modestly, and avoid disrupting rituals.
