From day one, the scary north wall, with its giant crack and curved exterior has been the most prevalent topic of conversation amongst our friends, family and community members. But to us, from day one, this was the wall we were the most concerned about. The first issue was the grade. It's the part of the house where the two levels come together on the outside. The hillside was kept back by large boulders: effective in grade retention, but ineffective in water proofing the nonexistent foundation. Between rain running alongside the limestone for decades, if not centuries, and a hole in the roof, this wall suffered some of the most extensive and irreversible water damage and subsequent lamination. The second issue was the lumber section of the house. The limestone wall holds up a large beam, connecting the roof and lumber on both the south and north walls, as well as the interior second floor. We knew bracing was essential to keep the house up: an issue we had not faced before. Our last issue was planning for an outdoor patio space, and designing the back walls and retention walls to allow us to make a large outdoor entertaining space for ourselves in the future. All of these parts needed to work seamlessly together, and be done in the correct order to ensure the walls were interlocked perfectly, the foundations solid and the beams supported. It took a lot of thought, drawing and conversations to figure out more than anything other section. But thankfully, as we write this, we have done that. But this is just part one. We had several major contributors to this part of the project. First was Ádám, way back in February. He and Luka's elder brother Metod, helped us take out the large tree stump that was causing us major issues. Next was Elena, our digging queen, came and helped us dig the first part of the foundation. It was a big help, especially since she dug most of the east wall by herself. The second and third were our stars of west wall, Olivia and Tobias. When they arrived, we told them it would be a tough two weeks. We needed to dig through the old landfill, meaning there would be lots of garbage, and certainly lots of animal bones. But they were complete champions. They worked their butts off, pulling out heavy boulders, sorting through dirt to pick out the garbage, and digging endlessly. We laughed and sang through it, and can be grateful that we are rid of the landfill for good. Hvala lepa Ladi Bajde in Metod Bajde. Danke Elena Priess. Köszönöm Ádám Hampuch. Tak Olivia Johansen og Tobias Sonne-Hansen.
