For "Kievest" / French baritone Maurice Renaud (1861-1933) / Vision Fugitive / Heriodiade (Massenet) / Recorded: 1906 -- ITEM: (PHOTOGRAPH) Renaud is pictured as Herod on the cover of the December 1909 edition of The Theater magazine, when he was appearing in Herodiade at the Manhattan Opera in New York. ITEM: (SOUND) From a late 1940s reissue on red vinyl, some collectors feel these pressings lack a certain bloom, not as forward as the originals. Renaud studied at the Paris Conservatory and made his debut (1883) at the Theatre de la Monnaie, where he remained until 1890; he sang there in 1884 in the world premiere of Sigurd. In 1890 he was engaged at the Opera Comique, where he first appeared in the role of Karnac in Le Roi d'Ys. He immediately has great success at the two great Paris opera houses, and was also highly successful in guest appearances at La Scala, Covent Garden, and the Brussels and Monte Carlo Operas. In 1902 he sang the role of Boniface at Monte Carlo in the world premiere of Le Jongleur de Notre-Dame, and in 1905, again at Monte Carlo, he sang in the world premiere of Cherubin; in 1906 at the Theatre Nouveau in Paris he had a part in the world premiere of Le Clown. He 1906 he was engaged at the Metropolitan Opera, but due to a change in management the contract fell through and he became a highly successful singer on the roster of the Manhattan Opera Company (1906-1910). He was a member of the Metropolitan Opera (1910-12) and appeared as guest with the Chicago and Boston companies. In 1912 he returned to France and ended his career in Paris where he taught singing. He united a complete mastery of the techniques of singing, a deeply founded musicality, and a rare stylistic delicacy of portrayal. He was particularly famous in the role of Don Giovanni.
