I set out to study watercolor depth — and accidentally overworked the painting. This timelapse breaks down where it went wrong and what I’ll do differently next time. In this video, I walk through a full watercolor landscape study painted from a photograph I took at God’s Acre Healing Springs in South Carolina. This is part of a longer-term effort to better understand watercolor by working observationally instead of purely from imagination. I talk through my pencil layout, early washes, color decisions, and the moment where hyper-focusing on one area started flattening the painting. Rather than chasing perfection, this study is about recognizing habits, mistakes, and learning how watercolor behaves over time. If you’re learning watercolor, landscape painting, or observational drawing, this video focuses on: avoiding overworking washes building depth with color and value learning from mistakes instead of restarting using studies to improve faster Website: https://www.schoon.art Shop: https://schoonart.myshopify.com/ Email: Jason@schoon.art
