The Science Museum of Virginia is currently closed to the public so we're taking our popular Lunch Break Science series, sponsored by Bon Secours, online! On July 22, 2020, E. Thomas Ewing, professor of history at Virginia Tech; Ariel Ludwig, recent Science and Technology in Society (STS) doctoral graduate; and Jessica Brabble, second-year history graduate student, presented “Benefits of Masks?: Public Health Policy During the 1918 Influenza Epidemic.” During the 1918 influenza epidemic, public health officials in Virginia and across the United States implemented measures to control the spread of disease. Those measures were very similar to today’s response, such as school closings, prohibitions on public meetings, restrictions on businesses and other measures we now call “social distancing.” Using history, scientific explanations and public debates, a team of Virginia Tech researchers will explore the lessons learned from the historic 1918 health crisis and how it might help influence health guidelines, public behavior, and popular attitudes today and beyond.
