Day 5, Unity Unanimity Unity is critical in our families, councils, quorums, presidencies, classes, and groups. Let’s look at D&C 107, which is a great section on principles and fundamentals of the organization of our Saviors restored church. If we go to verse 27, and verses 30 and 31. It talks about the great principle of unanimity. That decisions should be made by the unanimous voice of the same. Meaning at whatever level we are working at, whether in families, church, councils, etc. Decision can and should be made unanimously, but we don’t often hold ourselves to this high standard. In this case, in D&C 107, it is specifically talking about the First Presidency and the Quorum of the Twelve Apostles. That is, every member in each quorum must be agreed to its decisions, in order to make their decisions of the same power or validity one with the other. Like I said, I don’t think we hold ourselves very often to this rigorous standard. So, how is this possible? How is this done? What are the spiritual principles that should exist to reach unanimity? What principles should be observed? In verse 30 it says, “The decisions of these quorums, (families) or either of them, are to be made in all righteousness, in holiness, and lowliness of heart, meekness and long-suffering, and in faith, and virtue, and knowledge, temperance, patience, godliness, brotherly kindness and charity; Then in verse 31 it says, “Because the promise is, if these things abound in them, they shall not be unfruitful in the knowledge of the Lord.” I have thought a lot about what it means to ‘not be unfruitful in the knowledge of the Lord.’ I would replace the words, “Knowledge of the Lord,” by the word revelation. Knowledge of the Lord, and His Doctrines, and His principles, and His designs, of His purposes of His gospel, are all about revelation. It says if those things don’t abound in you as you counsel together, you will miss revelation. To have a right to revelation, these qualities, attributes, characteristics, which are spiritual gifts must abound in us. Then we will have access to inspiration, revelation from God. So… Unity, for me proceeds any form of revelation. Let me repeat that, Unity, for me proceeds any form of revelation. So , it is worth any effort, remember, “if ye are not one, ye are not mine.” Therefore, what qualifies families, presidencies, classes, quorum’s, and groups for this blessing of unanimity. Individuals in any group decision making process should be seeking spiritual gifts. They should be only seeking the Lord’s will, not their own opinion. So families, in order to make decisions in unanimity, have to have in Remember these words from Elder Christofferson. He said, “We will become of one heart and one mind as we individually place the Savior at the center of our lives and follow those, he has commissioned to lead us.” (Elder D. Todd Christofferson Come to Zion, CR 10/ 08) We all collectively and individually must put Jesus Christ at the center of what we do, and His spiritual gifts must abound in us.
