In her early books, Fried Herman sometimes published the dances and reconstructions of other choreographers, most especially Pat Shaw’s. Naturally she included the music and instructions to An American Husband, but also to Pat’s historical reconstructions, such as Valentine’s Day, The Wive’s Victory, and The Pursuit, a longways dance in proper formation done to the tune New Epson Wells. It appears in The Road to Ruin; you can see from the video that Fried hand-colored the images in her personal copy of that book. The dance opens with modified “Jack’s Maggot” heys, and you can observe in the dancing in this video how at the end of the second such hey, the 2s move up the set together, while the 1st man times his hey and adjusts his track wide to ensure he and his partner end together, facing down to the next couple for the moves in B1. Also for the second hey, the 2nd man turns to his right after moving up to 1st place to enter the hey smoothly. Fried did not specify a skipping step for the final full figure 8 in her written instructions but in later years taught it that way, as she loved adding texture to a dance. We followed Pat’s instructions in having only the 1s do the figure 8; Christine Helwig and others have extended this to a double figure 8. It’s a pleasure to watch how the dancers spot up and down the line during this figure and move in unison with such good energy. And didn’t A Joyful Noise radiate good energy in this dance, bringing out the dark colors in this exceptional tune while giving us lift every step of the way. –Paul Ross
