In India, Dialysis Patient Saves Dying COVID-19 Victims

"If this oxygen can save someone's life… give this oxygen cylinder to them.” Mumbai resident, Rozy Saldhana, 52, has kidney failure and requires dialysis. Yet, she didn’t hesitate to give up her only oxygen tank to someone who needed it more in this coronavirus pandemic in India. India faces a critical shortage of oxygen cylinders, vaccines and hospital beds during the second wave of COVID-19 infections. The newer strains of coronavirus such as the Delta variant are also highly infectious. The Indian healthcare system collapsed, leaving patients to fend for themselves. Local communities are rallying to help each other. In Delhi, Sikh voluntary organisation Khalsa Help International set up makeshift hospitals across the city to treat patients turned away by crowded hospitals. This free service is run voluntarily by doctors and healthcare workers, providing oxygen and beds to patients with urgent needs. Even if more vaccines are secured, the country’s vaccination drive needs to be accelerated to outnumber the rate of infections. According to the Government of India’s Ministry of Health and Family Welfare, only 13% of the population have received one dose of the vaccination and 3% are fully vaccinated, as of June 1st 2021.
