Today you’ll find out if you should skip lines in IELTS essays, and how that affects your score. Visit ielts.allearsenglish.com for the simplest and most effective IELTS strategies. In a recent Facebook Live session (Thursdays, 12pm PST), a student reported an odd instruction from a tutor. The teacher had told him that he must skip lines, or only write on every other line, on his IELTS answers sheets for writing. In fact, no, you don’t have to! Your score is not affected by neatness, unless the examiner really has trouble reading what you wrote. That very rarely happens. One thing that does directly impact your score, however, is the examiner seeing clearly that you have separate paragraphs. So, you can skip a line between paragraphs, or you can just indent the first line about 5 spaces. Another issue to consider is how you feel most confident writing essays, because that does improve your score. If you are a person who corrects a great deal when you proofread, then you might consider skipping lines to allow more room for that. When you skip lines, you most likely will need extra answers sheets, which is totally fine. Simply raise your hand and the invigilator will bring you some.
