Cold knife conization Cold Knife Conization (CKC) is a surgical procedure used to remove a cone-shaped section of tissue from the cervix. It’s both diagnostic and therapeutic, especially for women with high-grade cervical intraepithelial neoplasia (CIN 2 or CIN 3) or when early-stage cervical cancer is suspected. 🧬 What Is Cold Knife Conization? A scalpel (not heat or laser) is used to excise a cone-shaped piece of the cervix. The removed tissue includes the transformation zone, where cervical cancer most often begins. The sample is sent to a lab for histopathological analysis to confirm the presence and extent of abnormal or cancerous cells2. 🩺 Indications Abnormal Pap smear with unclear lesion margins High-grade CIN not fully visualized by colposcopy Adenocarcinoma in situ or early-stage cervical cancer (Stage 0 or IA1) Inadequate results from punch biopsy or LEEP Fertility preservation in young women where hysterectomy is not preferred3 🛠️ Procedure Overview Performed under general or regional anesthesia Cervix is stained with Lugol’s iodine to highlight abnormal areas A scalpel is used to remove the cone-shaped tissue Hemostatic sutures may be placed to control bleeding4 ⚠️ Risks & Considerations Bleeding and infection Cervical stenosis (narrowing of the cervix) Infertility or pregnancy complications (e.g., second-trimester miscarriage or preterm birth due to cervical weakening) Requires follow-up to monitor for recurrence or residual disease 🌟 Advantages Provides a larger and deeper tissue sample than LEEP or laser ablation More accurate for diagnosing glandular lesions or early invasive cancer Preserves uterus and fertility in many cases #Coldknifeconization
