During World War II, 44% of the nation's vegetables came from "Victory Gardens," or home gardens. Home gardens, or smallholder agroecosystems, are also known as "front yards and back yards!" Home gardens are looked to as a possible solution to food insecurity and climate resilience in both urban and rural environments in the United States. Perhaps even more so in the COVID 19 era. Yet models of what localized food systems should look like for a sustainable food system are sparse. Dr. Robin Currey, faculty director of the Master of Science in Sustainable Food System program sharing research from localized food systems in Kyrgyzstan where 77% of fruits and berries and 52% of its vegetables come from gardens that average only 0.35 acres, this presentation illustrates what can be planted and raised in home gardens in the US to meet household food security needs.
