The goal is to expand the circle of those who can make great music for us, and who can contribute their ideas to the new-music world. Three musical artists will partner with Alarm Will Sound in each year-long Alarm System program. In this inaugural 2014-15 year, the artists are Valgeir Sigurđson, Ryan McNeely (aka Adult Fur), and the trio Medeski, Martin & Wood. These artists represent diverse musical styles and creative methods, ranging from experimental jazz to electronica, studio production to funk jams, and algorithmic composition to open improvisation. These artists will create for Alarm Will Sound without the restriction that their work start its life as a traditional printed score and parts. Instead, the first step will be bringing the ensemble to the artist's music-making method, whatever that may be. Alarm System artists and Alarm Will Sound’s musicians then directly share their different music-making skills and ideas so that the creative process will emerge from the effort of making each other’s different approaches work together. Alarm System creates access between musicians from different traditions so that artistic exchange can happen where it otherwise would not. Alarm System is supported by The Andrew W.
