The Hon Peter Gutwein brings a powerful message to WorkSafe Tasmania about the role of health, both physical and mental, in effective, sustainable leadership. Peter understands firsthand how physical discipline supports mental clarity, emotional resilience and leadership performance. Throughout his premiership, including during the unprecedented pressures of the COVID-19 pandemic, he championed open conversations about mental health and the importance of showing up as a whole, healthy person. In this special session, Mr Gutwein will reflect on the lessons he’s learned from the highest levels of leadership, and why wellbeing must be seen as a strategic and cultural priority in every workplace. His story is one of strength, vulnerability and the courage to lead from the inside out. MRC-Tas Chair and former Tasmanian Premier The Hon. Peter Gutwein is a former Premier and Treasurer of Tasmania, now advising some of the world’s most progressive companies tackling climate change and clean energy transition. From leaving school at 15, overcoming a speech impediment, and battling a fear of public speaking, Peter’s story is one of sheer determination, humility, and purpose. As Premier, he led with compassion and conviction, putting the wellbeing of Tasmanians at the heart of every decision. He turned Tasmania from the nation’s worst performing economy into its best, protected the state during the COVID-19 pandemic with swift, independent action, and championed a bold renewable energy future with one of the world’s leading net zero targets. Post-politics, Peter now works with companies like Sea Forest, Incat, and Countrywide Hydrogen to drive global sustainability. A black belt in Tae Kwon Do and a marathon runner, he’s recently become one of the fittest 59-year-olds in Australia, proving that peak performance in life and leadership starts with balance and wellbeing. His story resonates because it’s real, authentic, funny, moving, and full of hard-earned insight.
