PhD Momma – it's like two babies but twice the reward! 1. Adapt – embrace your survival instincts 2. Tune out the negative advice 3. Tell your supervisor as soon as possible – this is for safety and support; when it comes to teratogenicity, the first-trimester rule is pointless. We were able to prep, plan, and optimise, and I finished my PhD on time! 4. Know when to say no 5. Proceed with caution with routine instead, capitalise when the mood strikes 6. Trust your friends and family who want to help – friends and family far away did ship gifts, so have a wish list ready. Help is Help 7. Prep over Plan 8. Use list and routine as a guide and not a determinant. Be accountable but understanding; after all, you're busy growing a limb at the moment. 9. Switch off. Bond with your baby; you're not expected to be 100 % productive! Depending on your maternity length (I only had 6wks), you might feel disconnected from research, so maybe you can keep up with Publett. 10. Trust the process; go easy on yourself. Personal Points: I got pregnant in the middle of my second year. Firstly, this was a happily welcomed unplanned pregnancy because we planned when I finished my PhD. Gave birth beginning of my third year. When I returned after 6 weeks, it started as one day a week, then two. Suppose I didn't feel like I didn't. Randomly I'd go in on weekends. Morning, evening, and night whenever I felt and schedule aligned. I lived near uni, so 10 pm nights doing a western blot was doable. Hubby was great; friends kept me company in the lab. I was fortunate to have an excellent support network. #phd #phdlife #phdstudent #research #phdjourney #science #gradschool #thesis #love #phdproblems #academia #doctormom #academiclife #university #gradschoollife #gradschoolproblems #Publett #phdstudentlife #phdmum #phdchat #doctorate #phdcandidate #dissertationlife #doctoralstudent #scientist #thesiswriting #motivationalquotes #researcher #womeninscience #PhdMom
