The First Hussite Crusade of 1420 stands as one of medieval Europe's most dramatic military failures. After Jan Hus was burned at the stake in 1415, Bohemia erupts into revolution. When radical Hussites begin throwing Catholic officials from Prague's windows in the First Defenestration, King Sigismund and Pope Martin V respond by declaring a crusade against the heretics. But what followed was not an epic siege of Prague by the Crusaders at all. Rather, a legendary one-eyed commander named Jan Žižka would prove that peasants with flails could defeat the greatest armored knights of Europe. This video explores the founding of the radical Taborite commune, as well as the Battle of Vítkov Hill on July 14, 1420, where Žižka's desperate defense saved Prague from Sigismund's massive crusading army. This is the story of how the Hussite Wars began and how Bohemia defied the Catholic world. © 2026 Maya Ventures, LLC. All rights reserved. Sources: Lutzow, Count. The Hussite Wars. London: J.M.
