2025 Montana Mule Deer — Day 2 | We Got Him! For Day 2 of their Eastern Montana mule deer hunt, Nick, Jalen, and Jaden head back into familiar territory—ground that’s brought them success in years past. Almost following the same footprints they made just a couple weeks earlier, they start the hike in and begin seeing deer right away. After reaching a high point, they break out the glass and finally spot a decent buck far in the distance. With them being over 3,000 yards away, they get the spotter on him to figure out what he is and whether there might be a bigger buck nearby. Jaden has never shot an out-of-state buck and has only taken one mule deer before, so he isn’t looking for a giant—just a buck that gets him excited and represents Eastern Montana. Jaden decides to make a loop through several canyons and draws to see if something better turns up. After not finding anything that catches their eye—just a few smaller bucks—he makes the call to go after the buck they spotted earlier that morning. With snow starting to move in, they cut the distance in half and find the buck now bedded near the top of a drainage with a doe he’s been chasing. Things get tricky—he’s in a spot where he can see a long ways, and there are other deer between them and the target buck. They work their way down to about 900 yards, but now he’s on his feet and actively chasing does. Using a leapfrog method, Nick and Jaden move while Jalen keeps eyes on the buck. Suddenly, the buck pushes his group of does over the ridge and the chase is on. The three of them drop into the creek bottom and use it for cover to close the distance without being seen. Eventually, they spot the deer again at just under 400 yards. The buck slips into the creek bottom and disappears, forcing them to carefully move in after him. As they creep along, a doe busts out and everything turns chaotic. Jaden gets set up with the buck in his scope, but the group takes off and they have to quickly reposition. One more setup… Jaden gets the buck back in his crosshairs… and bang. The buck drops, and Jaden harvests his second mule deer and his very first out-of-state buck, capping off a successful second trip to Eastern Montana. An intense stalk, changing conditions, and a moment none of them will forget.
