As the second installment in a series on helicopter training, this film provides a detailed, step-by-step demonstration of fundamental maneuvers using the Bell H-13 Sioux helicopter, including taxiing, hovering, controlled ascents and descents, and emergency landing protocols. Film opens; Opening credits and United States of America War Office seal (0:08). Fleet of Bell H-13 Sioux Helicopters (0:36). Solo student pilot in Bell H-13 Sioux demonstrates landing in grassy field (0:52). Taxiing: Pilot advances throttle, close-up of engine RPM reader on dashboard (1:06). Pilot pushes cyclic pitch control slightly forward; Wide shot of helicopter moving slightly forward (1:20). Relationship between collective pitch and speed of helicopter during taxiing (1:50). Close-up feet controlling anti-torque petals, control turns of helicopter (2:25). Taking off to a Hover: Same conditions as previous maneuver, pilot adds pressure to left pedal while increasing pitch; Shot of helicopter slowly rising and hovering above grass and reaches hovering altitude (3:10). Pilot uses cyclic pitch to control balance, tail heavy vs. nose heavy (3:59). Helicopter moves forward at low altitude while pilot moves cyclic pitch forward (4:21). Helicopter moves forward at steady altitude, maintaining straight direction, close-up of pilot adjusting pedals (4:31). Bell H-13 Sioux demonstrating hovering turn (4:51). Moving Sideward at Hovering Altitude: Pilot looks in direction of desired movement and moves cyclic pitch in same direction while coordinating pedals; Shot of helicopter (5:16). Moving Backwards at Hovering Altitude: Pilot pulls cyclic pitch towards himself, wide shot of helicopter moving backwards (5:48). Protocol for Engine Stalling at Hovering Altitude: Steps for autorotation from a hover (6:07). Taking Off: Taking off to hover, followed by 90-degree clearing turn, forward cyclic pitch to move forward (7:10). Pilot stabilizes air speed, close-up dashboard readers showing RPM (8:09). Pilot POV (8:24). Altimeter reading on dashboard (8:42). Airborne helicopter executes right turn to enter traffic pattern, reaches traffic altitude (9:06). View of airborne helicopter at traffic altitude above forested area, conducts another turn and enters downwind traffic lane (9:38). Conducting more air work exercises outside of traffic lane; how to adjust air speed and altitude (10:28). View of airborne helicopter at about 800 ft above ground and traveling 60 mph (11:26). Protocol for engine stalling at high altitude - View of helicopter slowly descending above vast forested area (11:40). Helicopter conducts no flare / auto rotation to ensure smooth landing without engine - Helicopter makes smooth landing in fairly large, cleared area (12:09). Step-by-step process for no flare autorotation with corresponding footage of pilot in helicopter (12:35). Pilot’s POV of large clearing below, ideal spot for emergency landing (for training purposes using stage field) (13:15). Aerial view of helicopter executing controlled descent (13:55). Step-by-step for executing slow, controlled descent (14:08). Entering traffic pattern for normal approach: Airborne helicopter enters downwind lane and maintains traffic altitude at steady speed (15:10). Pilot executes final approach, aligns helicopter with lane for landing (16:21). Landing from a hover Pilot hovers to parking area (17:35). Pilot demonstrates step-by-step how to land from hover (17:41). Standard shut-down procedure (18:00). View of rotor coming to full stop (19:02). Before exiting aircraft, pilot fills out form DD-781 (19:11). Pilot secures rotor to tail boom (19:28). Summary (19:52). Closing credits (21:37). Film ends (21:43). Motion picture films don't last forever; many have already been lost or destroyed. For almost two decades, we've worked to collect, scan and preserve the world as it was captured on 35mm, 16mm and 8mm movies -- including home movies, industrial films, and other non-fiction. If you have endangered films you'd like to have scanned, or wish to donate celluloid to Periscope Film so that we can share them with the world, we'd love to hear from you.
