We wanted to do something unlike anything we’d ever seen before. We kept referring to it as an “electronic jam band”—something closer to the Grateful Dead than a DJ set. We knew we were years away from achieving this, but we got to work right away, recording live sets together from wherever we were: a hut in Laurel Canyon, a barn in Connecticut, and even from two separate countries during the pandemic. This dream fell apart when Pierce left us. But late last year, I started to wonder if there was a way to bring some of that spirit back on my own—to build a new live show rooted in motifs from the new songs I’d written, woven together with improvisations inspired by our early jams. With the collaborative help of the brilliant art team at Anjunadeep, we were able to take this vision somewhere even more special than I could have imagined. The live set is elevated further by the movement and artistry of Alexandria Vernon, recreating and reinterpreting the cover of ‘our lives entwined’.
