Differences between Management and Administration 1. Meaning: Administration: is a process of directing the all organization effectively to achieve its objectives Management: is the process to get things done through others (group of people by directing their efforts to achieve pre-determined goals (the organizational objectives)). 2. Nature: Administration: formulate the plans, frame policies and set objectives Management: put plans and policies into actions 3. Process: Administration: decides what is to be done and when it is to be done Management: who will do the work and how will it be done 4. Function: Administration: is a thinking function because plans and policies are determined under it Management: is a doing function because manager gets work done under their supervision 5. Skills: Administration: conceptual and human skills Management: technical and human skills 6. Level: Administration: top level function Management: middle and lower level function Nursing Management It is the coordination and integration of nursing resources by applying the management process to achieve care and service goals and objectives Who is the Nurse Manager ? The manager is persistent person, tough minded, hardworking, intelligent, and have analytical ability. The nurse manager is the individual with 24-hours responsibility for the management of one or two nursing units Different types of nurse managers are classified into three levels ? 1. Top-level Managers: is the highest level in the organizational hierarchy The managers are presidents and their vice They are responsible to apply the administration process to achieve objectives 2. Middle-level Managers: are the linking pin between the top-level managers and the first-line ones They are supervisors or coordinators They are responsible for applying the administration and management process in more than one unit 3. First-line Managers (operational manager): are the first level above the non-managers personnel They are head nurses or team leaders They are responsible to apply the management process in one unit Managerial Skills → three categories Managers must need specific skills to perform their jobs effectively A manager will make use of their own abilities, knowledge base, experiences, and perspectives to increase the productivity of those with whom they manage Managers need three categories: 1. Technical Skills → (Ability to use methods and techniques) These skills are needed to accomplish a specific task These skills are a combination of formal education, training, and on-the-job experience These skills are important for first-level managers who must use them in training new workers and monitoring daily work activities 2. Human Skills (interpersonal skills) → (Ability to motivate) These skills are used by the manager to work with employees: trust, cohesion, fairness, empathy, and good will Human skills help the manager to communicate and motivate an employee to increase work productivity 3. Conceptual Skills → (Ability to comprehend) Ability of the manager to comprehend abstract ideas and apply them to specific situations These skills allow the manager to solve problems Management process / functions The management process consists of five basic management functions: Planning, Organizing, Staffing, Directing, Controlling 1. Planning: A process to decide what, how, where, when, and by whom it is to be done Function) Setting goals, deciding on courses of action, developing rules and procedures. 2. Organizing: Identifying work, classifying activities, assigning responsibilities, and delegation 3.
