Adaptation of a popular teaching lab demonstrating the activity of catalase and hydrogen peroxide. The use of detergent enables a clear visualization of reaction rate as the gaseous product is captured in bubbles with an easily measurable height. A value representing average reaction rate can be calculated under various conditions (differing quantities of catalase solution in this example) by dividing the final height of the bubble column — from the top of the tube to the initial fill level of all the components at start of the reaction — by the time elapsed when the bubble column reaches the top of the tube (or when the evolution rate slows noticeably).
