The Mississauga Pops performing El Camino Real at the Música Latina concert on October 19, 2025 at the Meadowvale Theatre. El Camino Real ("The Royal Road" or "The King's Highway") is a lively concert band fantasia composed by Alfred Reed. The title is a nod to the extensive network of historic Spanish roads developed across North and South America, particularly in the southwestern United States and Mexico, connecting missions and settlements. Reed's composition, however, is not a travelogue, but rather a fantasy based on the harmonic movements of traditional Spanish folk dances. The piece features a vibrant opening section inspired by the spirited, triple-meter Jota, a traditional Spanish dance often accompanied by castanets and guitar. This is followed by a slow, tranquil middle section loosely based on the more contemplative Fandango, before the work ultimately returns to the vigorous energy of the opening material for a fiery conclusion, showcasing three distinct musical themes derived from Spanish folk idiom.
