(27 May 1995) English/Nat Bosnian Serb soldiers Friday forced French Foreign Legion soldiers in Sarajevo to surrender after targeting their base with machinegun fire and bazookas. APTV was the only foreign TV crew present when the peacekeepers at the Lukevitza barracks surrendered with a white flag and handed over their weapons as prisoners of war. Soldiers from the Bosnian Serb army took up position around the compound and littered buildings and armoured personnel carriers with machinegun fire and bazooka artillery. Minutes later, the white flag rose and two members of the Foreign Legion emerged from the battered building. In an act of humiliation, the French peacekeepers were forced to line up in front of APTV's camera and were told that they were now prisoners of war. SOUNDBITE: "After two days of NATO air strikes on Serb positions without any reason or better to say without reason to make pressure on Serb political and military leadership to accept solutions which are completely unacceptable for the Serb population, unfortunately, we were in position to take UN members as hostages to try to save Serb people. Here we have accommodated one platoon on weapons collection point. Everything was according to Marshall Law, they were offered to surrender and to become war prisoners treated according to all Geneva Conventions. But they received orders from their superiors which are safe somewhere in their offices not to surrender because of it we were obliged to use fire, having in mind not to make any wound to any French soldiers. Finally they were clever to surrender and now today we are in position to see that. We hope that this situation will resolve very soon and that NATO will decide that the solution cannot be found on this place according to those measures that they did over the last three days." SUPER CAPTION: Milenko Indjic - Bosnian Serb Army The Foreign Legion soldiers were then ordered to surrender all their weapons and pile them in the bunker of the compound.
