Where the previous album, “Celebrant” flirted with a fusion of black and death metal, “Prolegomenon” embraces a more primal sound. The album leans heavily into the blackened side of their influences, yet it does not stop there. Skin Tension boldly incorporates elements of Zeuhl, a genre pioneered by the French band Magma and later adopted by avant-garde acts in Japan into their already eclectic mix. The result is a sound that is alien but also familiar, a swirling maelstrom of noise, black metal, and war metal, all infused with a frenetic energy that feels as much improvised as it does meticulously crafted.
