In just ten days starting from the second week of the 2020 spring hunting season (18th-27th April), BirdLife Malta and police recovered no less than 31 known illegally shot protected birds. The species recovered vary but the highest number of illegal hunting casualties found by members of the public during this period were Turtle-doves for a total of 13, which continues to prove how this year's spring hunting season supposedly open only for Quail is once again a smokescreen for hunters to illegally shoot the vulnerable Turtle-dove. An increase in Turtle-doves being recovered was in fact noticed when the season coincided with the peak migration of this red-listed bird. This video documents some of the illegally shot protected birds received which, apart from Turtle-dove, include different species such as Bee-eater, Yellow-legged Gull, Common Swift, Golden Oriole, Stone Curlew, Hoopoe, Grey Heron, and birds of prey such as Common Kestrel, Marsh Harrier, Honey-buzzard and even a Black Kite. Not even a pigeon was spared! In some of the cases the shot birds, including Turtle-doves, were retrieved from Miżieb - a mecca for hunting illegalities which the government now wants to hand over to the hunting lobby.
