In late 1971, a new interior look was implemented on Braniff International Boeing 727 aircraft dubbed the High Wide and Handsome Wide Body Look. It was a first in the industry that gave Braniff's narrow body 727 interiors the look and feel of the new larger wide body jumbo jets. On September 21, 1971, Braniff Chairman Harding L. Lawrence made the official anouncement of the new High Wide and Handsome interior for Braniff's jets at a special news conference. News media were treated to a mockup of what the new wide body cabins would look like once completed. Lawrence noted that Braniff's 35 Boeing 727 aircraft in service at the time would be converted to the new Wide Body Cabin designed by Braniff's design firm Harper and George. In addition to the new interiors, a new Two Tone Exterior Paint Scheme featuring four vibrant color variants would also be applied including Green over Olive Green, Blue over Light Blue, Red over Tan/Aztec Gold and Orange over Mustard/Ochre. This change was not only revolutionary to Braniff but to the airline industry as a whole. The conversion of the aircraft cost $7 million USD and was the first major exterior and interior overhaul of Braniff aircraft since the epochal 1965 End of the Plain Plane Campaign that featured multicolored aircraft schemes designed by architect and designer Alexander Girard and later updated in 1967, by Braniff's industrial design firm, Harper + George.
