He is trained in Tabla under Pt G L Samant, in vocal music under Pt Suhas Datar & Pt Sudhir Datar, followed by tutelage under Pt Jasraj (1981-96). He is a self-taught harmonium player. After his M.Sc., M.Phil., Ph.D. (Mathematics), Dr. Thatte devoted his life fully to music. Dr. Thatte has established the harmonium's own musical idiom to evoke nuance, depth & grace. His concerts present the harmonium in its rightfully unique musical expression. His masterful technique, precise articulation & perfect tuning have been well appreciated. Dr. Thatte's fundamental and in-depth research in musicology (its artistic & scientific aspects) is seminal, elaborately discussed in his book Sangeet Vimarsha.
