Did you know 70th birthday is a big deal in Korea? It even has a special name called Chil Soon. It’s kind of like Sweet Sixteen except it’s for seniors. Mom turned 70 this year. So my sister and I cooked up the storm for a party with her church family. Back in the days reaching 70 was rare, so it became a time to celebrate and honor a life of endurance, sacrifice, and wisdom. When I was growing up in Korea,I was frustrated by Korea s hierarchical culture and couldn’t wait to get out of it. But as I got older, I am realizing there is something beautiful about respecting and cherishing our seniors. We celebrated mom for Seventy years of quiet strength, a lifetime of giving, and a legacy that lives on through us. 엄마, We’re so grateful and we celebrate you.
