The development predicament and future of traditional lacquer culture in Guilin, China. A Chinese man who makes his living by making classical lacquerware Keeping upright and innovative, inheriting the tradition of Chinese lacquerware–Boyang Wang In the summer of 2019, former Japanese Prime Minister Yukio Hatoyama and his wife received a special gift on a cruise ship on the Li River in Guilin. When Prime Minister Hatoyama opened the gift box, he was attracted by a pair of lacquer cups with splendid patterns. This pair of lacquer cups were made of the phoenix tail bamboo roots along the Li River, coated with more than 100 layers of lacquer and repeatedly polished. The famous Japanese lacquer master, Nagari Oishi, was given the Ganoderma lucidum lacquer cups by a Chinese friend and was pleased to comment that Guilin's natural lacquer works were well-crafted and ahead of the world. The lacquerware held by the former Prime Minister Hatoyama and lacquer master artist Nagari Oishi is from the hand of a young lacquerware artist Boyang Wang, a representative of Guangxi Intangible Cultural Heritage. It seems that every successful lacquerware work is a “glamorous” success, but the hardships paid by the doers are mostly unknown. "Five generations of inheritance, three bankruptcies". The road to making lacquerware is so difficult, Boyang Wang insisted on writing the story of "The Inheritance and Development of Natural Body Lacquerware in Guangxi".
