Created in 1916, the National Park Service was chartered "to conserve the scenery and the natural and historic objects and the wildlife therein and to provide for the enjoyment of the same in such a manner and by such means as will leave them unimpaired for the enjoyment of future generations." This is quoted from the Park Service webpage (and quite the run on sentence). Has the Park Service upheld this charter? At what point does road paving (new and old), complex welcome centers, lodges, etc., start to impair scenery, and more importantly the wildlife in these protected parks? The quantity of human visitation to these beautiful parks should not be the paramount grade as to their value. My argument is the opposite. The greater the human involvement is inside our Parks (visits, construction, etc), the further away we go off the course to the intent of the Parks creation in 1916.
