Why do humans sin? And can sin actually be explained—or does explanation itself distort the true nature of sin? In this reflection, I explore why sin cannot be explained, not first from the Bible, but from the nature of explanation itself. In philosophy of science, to explain an event is to place it under a law and thereby show why it had to happen. But laws belong to the created order – and ultimately trace back to God as their source. For this reason, sin cannot be explained without implicitly making God its cause. And Scripture and conscience are clear: God is not the author of sin. Sin does not originate as a law-governed necessity, but, rather, as an outflow of the human heart itself. While the Bible narrates the fall of Adam and the rebellion of Lucifer, it does not offer a causal explanation of sin that removes personal responsibility. Even apart from Adam or Satan, each of us encounters the reality of sin within ourselves. This is why explanation fails when it comes to sin – and why confession is all that remains. This video explores: Why humans sin even when they know better Why explaining sin often functions as a way of avoiding responsibility Why the origin of sin cannot be placed anywhere outside of our hearts Why confession, rather than explanation, is the only honest response to sin The difference between biblical narration and philosophical explanation This is a philosophical and theological reflection for those wrestling with questions about sin, responsibility, human nature, and the limits of finite reason. ⸻ “The word of the Lord came to me again, saying, “What do you mean when you use this proverb concerning the land of Israel, saying: ‘The fathers have eaten sour grapes, And the children’s teeth are set on edge’? “As I live,” says the Lord God, “you shall no longer use this proverb in Israel. “Behold, all souls are Mine; The soul of the father As well as the soul of the son is Mine; The soul who sins shall die.” (Ezekiel 18:1-4 NKJV) ⸻ “For from within, out of the heart of men, proceed evil thoughts, adulteries, fornications, murders, thefts, covetousness, wickedness, deceit, lewdness, an evil eye, blasphemy, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within and defile a man.”” (Mark 7:21-23 NKJV) ⸻ “And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.” Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the Lord before you.” (Exodus 33:18-19 NKJV) ⸻ “Now the Lord descended in the cloud and stood with him there, and proclaimed the name of the Lord. And the Lord passed before him and proclaimed, “The Lord, the Lord God, merciful and gracious, longsuffering, and abounding in goodness and truth, keeping mercy for thousands, forgiving iniquity and transgression and sin, but who will by no means clear the guilty, … ” (Exodus 34:5-7 ESV) ⸻ “What do you conspire against the Lord? He will make an utter end of it. Affliction will not rise up a second time.” (Nahum 1:9 NKJV) ⸻ #WhyHumansSin #ChristianPhilosophy #TheologyOfSin #OriginalSin #FaithAndReason
