I'm working on some sound design for a horror score so I've been meaning to buy some hooks etc to hang things from my studio ceiling for experiments like this and I found time today. So the previous owner of my house was a sheet metal worker and left quite a few large metal sheet behind my workshop. I kept them for literally this purpose because they sound great! I'm playing the sheet with a cheap cello bow that came with a B-stock cello. To my surprise, when I started to mark on the sheet a few divisions like 1/2, 1/3, 1/4 etc I was able to pick out parts of the harmonic series so it's actually possible to play a few notes of a tune. By muting the sheet with my finger at various divisions and bowing at others a handful of related tones can be produced. The lowest note I can get out of is approximately a D2 though I'll need to tune any recording I make. I'm still experimenting as bow pressure is quite important so in few places I get it squeal quite a bit. Edit: I should probably add that the sheet metal has a section at the bottom that is bent over at a slight angle which gives it a bit of rigidity. I suspect this helps the sheet resonate quite a lot I'm recording the sheet from behind using a matching pair of sE Electronics sE7's setup in a Gerzon array coincident pattern for stereo recording (https://www.soundonsound.com/techniqu...) and a Rode NT1A at the centre of these two mics to capture a bit more of the centre. Plus I'm hedging my bets as I'm not sure yet whether I'll need mono and/or stereo recordings at this stage. I'm recording in Reaper with a touch of Valhalla Supermassive on each channel just added to fill things out for this experiment so it doesn't sound rubbish on smartphones 😄 #ChrisLody
