Drummers: Kayla Butler, Elias Chanteloup, Peony Chung, Kristi Kimura, Misato Muraoka and Tony Salatino. Dancers: Andrew Smith, Kelly Howard, Pomona Lake, and Joshua Mclean Fusion is often defined as the joining of two or more things to form a single entity. Although in this sphere we often think of Fusion as a combination of two or more dance styles, I implore you to widen that definition and join us as we bring together two completely different cultures and movement styles. Lindy Hop is an African American swing dance that belongs to the family of Vernacular Jazz Dances. Done to swinging jazz music, the dance is known for individuality of style while preserving a common rhythm between two bodies. Taiko drumming has existed in Japan for thousands of years, and was used in a variety of spheres including communication, religion, preservation of culture, and celebration. Taiko spread to the United States in the 60s, sparking a new blend of Japanese American culture - rooted in tradition with a modern twist. In this piece, we will be combining Lindy Hop with a taiko drum piece called "Gendai ni Ikiru," or, "Living in the Present" written by Gary Tsujimoto of San Jose Taiko. This piece was inspired by San Jose Taiko's Swingposium program, which combines taiko, jazz, swing dance, and immersive theatre to tell a hidden history of one way Japanese Americans maintained morale in WWII Internment Camps – through swing dances with live big band music.
