Al Attles wasn’t the most skilled player in the world, but he was definitely one that laid everything on the line for his team. He played with a toughness that you didn’t expect in someone only 6 feet tall. He took on the enforcer role, not backing down from anyone, as he was known to get into scraps with seven footers on the regular. He wasn’t a knock-down shooter, but he took smart shots when he got close to the hoop. He was a good passer and an above average rebounder, but his greatest value was on defense. He would mirror the hips of his man and hound him for 94 feet before swiping at the rock at the perfect time to pluck it away. Al was such a menace on the defensive end, that he earned the nickname of the Destroyer. His extensive knowledge of the game allowed him to become a player coach, but as you’ll see later, him being on the sidelines didn’t mean that the intensity went away. He was someone you loved when he was on your side, but you hated going against him. Al’s impact goes well beyond the numbers, as he spent over 60 years in the Warriors organization, clearly making his mark as a leader and overall contributor to the game, so it’s time that we honor the Hall of Fame legacy of Al Attles. https://www.basketball-reference.com/...
