Water from the aqueduct, Bonaqa, Agusha, Shishkin Les. What we drink will say - Xiaomi Mi TDS Pen (water quality tester). What do you need to know about the general mineralization of water? Total water mineralization (TDS) is an indicator of the amount of dissolved in water substances, both inorganic and organic. The bulk of this indicator is made up of inorganic substances - calcium, magnesium, potassium and sodium salts in the form of bicarbonates, chlorides and sulfates that exist in water in the form of ions. The more ions, the greater the current between the electrodes lowered into the water. This is the principle of the Xiaomi Mi TSD Pen. In the United States, this value is called Total Dissolved Solids (TDS), the total amount of dissolved solids. Therefore, the device can be called TDS-meter or salt meter. The unit of measurement of the TDS-meter is the number of milligrams of salt per 1 liter of water - mg / l, or ppm (parts per million) - 1 part of the substance per million parts of water. In practical calculations, 1 mg / l = 1 ppm. It is important to understand the difference between the total mineralization of water (TDS) and the "water hardness". "Water hardness" - part of the total mineralization, caused only by calcium and magnesium salts (without sodium, potassium and others). In this case, the "rigidity" of water consists of two parts - temporary (removable) and permanent (unremovable). Disposable "rigidity" - leaves when boiling - turns into an insoluble scum (due to hydrocarbonates), unrecoverable (permanent) - does not go off to scale (chlorides and sulphates). The degree of "removable rigidity" of the water you use is simple: measure the TDS "before" and "after" boiling. It is desirable that the temperature of the water being tested is approximately the same (if your instrument does not correct the temperature). The measurement difference will be an indicator of "removable rigidity". The specifications given in the instructions for TDS-meters refer only to "drinking water", without affecting the range of so-called "drinking water". "Mineral waters", the degree of general mineralization of which is incomparably higher. For Russia, the permissible TDS of drinking water is 500 mg / L, for the USA - 1000 ppm (mg / L), in Ukraine, drinking water with a total mineralization of 100 to 1000 mg / L is physiologically fully recognized. It is such a water, TDS of which does not exceed 1000 mg / l, is called fresh water. This you need to know and not panic when your device, inserted into a container with an elite "mineral water", will show the values from the zone of "unfitness" for drinking water. It should be so, and only confirms the fact that the more the mineralization level of the mineral water you use, the less it is suitable for constant (continuous) use. Such water is used short courses for special medical indications. Separately, I would like to warn owners of complex purification systems from drinking very low mineralization water (from 100 to 50 and below mg / l). Systematically drinking this almost "distillate", you roughly violate the water-electrolyte balance in your body, which is fraught with serious health problems.
