US Central Command (CENTCOM) stated these vessels posed a threat by potentially deploying naval mines, disrupting global oil shipping—about one-fifth of the world's crude passes through Hormuz. The action followed Iran's threats to block enemy oil exports and close the strait if needed. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky claimed Russia is already aiding Iran with drones, missiles, and air defense systems. He warned this cooperation could escalate to Russian troops deploying to Iran, similar to North Korea sending ~10,000 soldiers to support Russia. Zelensky compared the situations, noting potential shifts in the ongoing Middle East conflict. In a related incident, an Iranian "suicide" boat (or underwater drone, per some reports) attacked the US-owned, Marshall Islands-flagged oil tanker Safesea Vishnu near Basra, Iraq, in Iraqi waters. One Indian crew member was killed, while 15 other Indian crew were rescued and taken to Basra. The attack heightened regional security concerns, with investigations ongoing. Iraq halted operations at oil terminals linked to Basra's Umm Qasr port after explosive-laden boats targeted two crude oil tankers departing the facility. Commercial ports continue functioning normally.
