The people who know me know that I am a big Decapitated fan and this is a very well-known song by them so this was bound to happen eventually. The only thing is that I didn't know it was going to take me so long. Really, this song was almost impossible to play live at speed and I should come clean about it: for like 2 months straight, I practiced alongside the studio version and the most I could get to was 96% of the speed. I was considering giving up until I watched "Decapitated Live at Le Ferrailleur" and when they played this song, I decided to pull out my metronome app. I was wondering "How does he do it?!?". To my surprise, they went from 108 BPM (the original tempo) down to 104 BPM (the live version tempo) which they are clearly doing to make playing it easier. So that's what I'm playing: Homo Sum at 104 instead of 108. Seemed like a good middle ground. Here are a few notes/things this song taught me: -Why are you letting other fingers touch the strings? Contact is only between pick and string, nothing else. -A downstroke is just letting your hand fall due to gravity, only upstrokes require muscle. -Playing with open/straight fingers works for some but not for me. Closed hand/fist grip seems to work best for me. -Smallest/shortest movements increase speed. -Relax as much as possible, always.
