This was the weekend of the baby's first birthday party. For Koreans, the first birthday party, known as the Dol or Dohl, is a major milestone birthday - akin to a quinceanera or a sweet 16. My family flew in the from the east coast and my wife's family all drove hundreds of miles to be with us. And I had to work. This was completely my fault, as it could have been avoided with better planning. But I am terrible at planning social events, and so a major work event and a major family event happened to collide. I was thinking that I could make it work and attend both, but it did not work out that way. I missed my baby's first birthday, the doljabi (a super fun Korean tradition where the baby chooses from an array of items which indicate the baby's future), and the smash cake. Other things I happened to miss this week/weekend due to this mega work project: the baby's first steps. Thanks for watching.
