Frog Leg Slides to Release Hip Tension – Mondays with Margot Frog leg slides are one of those exercises that feels like very little is happening. The brilliance though is in the combined mechanics at the hip, knee, and ankle. This one motion, either seated or lying down, includes the counter rotations at all three joints that are necessary for efficient walking and running. Steps Sit comfortably with your legs stretched long in front of you. You can also lie on your back if you prefer Turn out your left leg and bend your knee and hip Keep your pelvis and buttocks evenly weighted on the floor while you move your leg Reverse the leg motion to extend your leg to return to the start position Reps (3 variations) 1. Alternating legs Do 4-6 reps with each leg, alternating left and right. 2. One leg and then the other Do 4-6 reps with your left leg and then switch and repeat the sequence with your right leg. 3. Both legs Do 8-12 reps with both legs. Sensations Don’t be surprised if you feel very little at the beginning When the muscles start to work in sync, it is possible to feel activation deep in the back of the hips; there can be a stretch sensation in the inner thighs; and for some, there is engagement in the abdominal wall If there is strain or quick fatigue at your front hip creases, bend your legs less and move more slowly --- About Margot McKinnon, M.Ed., Certified Pilates Method Alliance Teacher Body Harmonics Founder & Director of Education Margot McKinnon founded Body Harmonics in 1998 with the vision of creating a centre for movement and health that is rich in learning, exploration and fun.
