Starter Motor strip & component testing

Following on from video #1406, this covers the strip down & full inspection of a starter motor from a 1992 Nissan Patrol GR 4.2 diesel. The vehicle had been driven in the sea a few weeks earlier prior to the starter motor failing. Years ago it was common for garages to strip and repair starter motors, though more recently, due to falling unit prices and rising labour costs, its become more common to just fit a new unit and not even 'bother' to take a look inside. Given the cost of a new starter for one of these vehicles its still a viable option to strip & inspect this unit with a view to undertaking a repair, especially given the cost of a new starter for this Patrol is around $600!! Individual service parts including brush packs, solenoids, one way clutches and even bearings are still easily sourced and relatively cheap. Combine this with doing the inspection/rebuild yourself and you'll save a ton of labour costs too, which makes this option totally viable. This video covers the testing of all the internal components, relating to Nissan's own factory Service manual for each test. Specifications are also included as & where required. To preform these tasks you'll need a handful of common tools plus a multi meter and a pair of vernier calipers too. If you have any questions or comments then just ask away & I'll do my best to help. However, after around an hour of searching on the internet I found a PDF of Nissan's manual for this Patrol so I'm confident you'll be able to do the same most likely. Worst case you will be able to purchase one for around $10 to $15 from many of the Workshop manual web sites around. Its probably best to obtain a copy of the manual before you make a start, that way you'll also know the best way to take your car's starter motor apart. Andy Mechanic!
